Cool Bathroom Example for Discussion

 V sent me this photo of a bathroom she likes. My thoughts are below.

A few thoughts in no particular order:

1. We don't have space for a wrap around bench in our shower, but we could have a bench on the short wall opposite the shower head. 

2. I really like how the floor tile is continuous through the bathroom and into the shower. We could do that, but it means some water might get out. Or we could have a saddle in between but with the same tile, although it wouldn't look the same. 

3. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the little medicine cabinets between sink and mirror. That is EXACTLY what I want. 

4. I really like the look of the 3 hole faucet with cross handles (separate hot and cold), but that's a little more fiddly to operate than a single hole faucet with integrated controls. Your call. 

5. Although I like the idea we have discussed of having a floating vanity suspended between two walls and w/o storage underneath, this one is really lovely and practical. We should probably not eschew the opportunity for extra storage in the primary bath if we can get it and still meet out style objectives. 

6. Yes to sconces on the sides rather than overhead. Small and warm. 

7. I really like the worn wood door frame to the shower. Looks like old maple flooring. Not sure where we could do this, but I like it. 

8. Black base boards are cool AF.

Here are the photos with my comments:

NOTES RE. ABOVE:

• Love the pendant light. 
• I like the way the wood lines of the built-ins continue up to the ceiling.  It has a Japanese quality to it. 
• The counter in the built-ins appears to be very thick marble.  I really like this - and the drawers below.  Where could we do this? (if at all)

NOTES RE. ABOVE:

• This vanity is lovely. I like the curves, but particularly the slatted wood. Wonder if this would work with an under-mount sink rather than a vessel as used here. 
• Note that the curtain rod is hidden behind the crown moulding.  The effect is lovely.
• Thinking about the marble wall behind the mirror.  
• The sconce light is not my fave.

NOTES RE. ABOVE:

• YES YES YES. I love everything about the fireplace, mantle, mirror and sconces.
• The mouldings on the walls are really pro looking. 
• By deploying matching sconces on either side of the mantle and again on the opposite side of the door, they created a really cool effect that defies simple symmetricity. Feels organic, not matchy-matchy.

NOTES RE. ABOVE:

• The curve of the arch at the top of this doorway is EXACTLY what I would like between the primary bedroom sitting area and sleeping alcove.
• I think I love the wood paneling on the inside of the door frame. At least I love the contrast and the way it defines a threshold.
• The slatted paneling behind the bar is great. Where could we use this?

NOTES RE. ABOVE:

• Again, the curtain rods hide behind the crown molding. Can we do this in the primary bedroom?
• The headboard and the larger wood panel behind it are GREAT. I really like this approach for our project - even with a shorter wood panel (terminating a few inches above the top of the sconces) so that we can still hang a painting above. 
• Love the velvet (?) headboard.

NOTES RE. ABOVE:

• I particularly like how the pendant lights lead the eye down the hall. I'm not sure sconces would do this as well. 
• Look at the floorboards. We could (and should?) do this V-shape slightly shifted to the left leading up the hall to the kitchen.
• Also, really like the wall trim details. Really clean and tight.

Notice how all these light fixtures project out away from the wall. I don't really love that look. It seems kind of hokey-beach housey.

I really love these lights, sculpturally, as an object. I'm just not sure they would work.  They're from Original BTC.

Under Stair Powder Room

Following are a bunch of examples of small powder rooms situated under a staircase. The thing I noticed most about these examples, which are the best I found online, is that, in most of them, the sink is in the corner and oriented perpendicular to the toilet. Without knowing the full footprint of the powder room, it is hard to know whether this was an aesthetic decision or compelled in some way by layout constraints - e.g., because a pooper's knees would bump the underside of the sink otherwise.
