For trim for the dining room, which I guess will just be continued all around the first floor, I'd like a wide baseboard, like 5 or 6 inches. For doors and I want butted shaker-style simple boards with a larger header. This is going to match the wainscoting (which we don't have yet but will probably be just beadboard with a simple flat thin board on top) like in pics below.
Windows: 3 or 4" bottom and side pieces, 4 or 6" header. You tell me about thickness - I'm guessing 1" is standard but I know the header should be slightly thicker than the sides to cast a little shadow. I've come up with these numbers but please tell me if there are rules of thumb for ratios that I'm not aware of.
Doors - same idea, wider than standard, butted casing. I don't know if you are supposed to use the exact same widths as windows or just same ratios.
Please tell me if I am asking for something that is much more difficult or expensive than just standard 1x3s or whatever it is. I assume since they are plain with no molding it should be reasonable, the only thing special about them is the width.
Note: for 1st floor bedroom, if it is easier/cheaper to switch to standard height baseboards just within that room, I'm fine with that. but I'm assuming the dining room trim should continue the same way (and will be the same color) throughout the hallway and living room.
I think these are just standard boards where I'd like a little wider, but note the header is wider than the side/bottom pieces. It looks like it matches the baseboard, but I'm not sure what ratio one is supposed to use.
I love the simple butted header. My understanding is that the header should be a tad thicker (deeper) than the legs.
This is very close (including the wainscoting, although they went for 2/3 up the wall instead of 1/3), and the header is even more elaborate than I'd want. Here the baseboard is 5.5"
