Industrial Chandelier - new armature

I am back to thinking about industrial chandeliers.  I have posted a few times before about them:

But I was never quite convinced I was on the right path.  The big pulley I already had was just too big, but I think I have found a perfect gear wheel to use as the armature for my chandelier.  (By the way, I really like the word "armature" - it belongs in poetry or, at the very least, metaphor.)

Happily, I picked up a heap of old chandelier crystals at the Santa Cruz flea market last summer.  

Now I just need to figure out how to drill holes in the cast iron pulley so that I can attach the wire loops.

Heater Grate Update

The heat source in our master bathroom is an in-wall electric heater with fan mounted on the outside wall between the toilet and the tub - highly visible.  It is controlled by a thermostat on the wall just inside the bathroom door, which explains why there is no knob on the hole in the lower left corner.  

I'd like to say it doesn't matter to me what the grill over the heater looks like, but I care a lot.  And this thing makes me sad, especially since we put down a beautiful marble floor and are installing a claw foot tub with classic brass filler and so forth.  This thing just doesn't go.

But not to worry, I am prepared.  I was at BIG NYC a few weeks ago and I spied a vintage cast iron heat register grill with lovely scrollwork.  It was downright cheap so I bought it figuring I would find a use for it.  Looks like it will have a place in our house much sooner than expected.

I am thinking I will paint it off-white and mount it about a half inch off the wall, just in front of the existing sheet metal heater grate. I don't want to get rid of the existing grate because the holes are smaller and I don't want any little fingers getting in there through the big holes in the scrollwork grate.  Yes, I know that the existing heater grate shows through the scrollwork, but that is just because it is white - I intend to paint it flat black so that (hopefully) it looks empty behind the top grate.

Flea Market Score - Chandelier Crystals

I set my alarm for 3:10am this past Sunday morning (which was actually 2:10am since we set the clocks forward that very morning) and I drove down to pick up a friend so that we could a attend the opening day of Elephant's Trunk flea market in New Milford, CT. The gates open at 5:45am to early buyers for $20 and they open to everyone else at 7am for $2 -- the theory being that by 7am everything good is already gone.
Anyway, we were exhausted (actually, he was still drunk because I basically picked him up from in front of the bar he'd been partying at) and it was cold,  but there were a lot of people and it was pretty exciting. Lots of vendors were there though most weren't set up until almost 7:30. Still,  we found some cool stuff.
The point of this post though is that I scored this trickortreat bucket of round crystals and a bag of tear drops as well fairly cheap. I figure anything under a dollar per crystal for large size crystals and I'm doing fine. 

V and I are discussing how to use the crystals to build an industrial looking chandelier. I just want something bright and sparkly and fun. V is better at imagining the overall way the piece comes together.
So these are the crystals.

design idea - curious old table base

I love this table base.  It is heavy and cast iron and adjustable in a lot of ways that a dining table never needs to be, but it is very groovy looking.  So, I think the plan is probably to strip this and re-paint it bright, glossy white and then to put on a thick, slab-lumber table-top.  That's what I imagine at least.

design idea - re-purposing old machine parts

I am really having a hard time not buying this thing. It is a 16" planer from the late 1800's and I would have to drive 2.5 hours to pick it up and do a lot of disassembly myself to get it into the car. 
The legs would make a great workbench base though.  And those two big wheels on the operating side beg to be re-purposed either as decorative elements or as something - I don't know what.  And doesn't that worn iron handle just beg to be pulled?  I want it (or parts of it at least).
