This is a pair of shelves I saw tucked into a corner at Zaborski Emporium in Kingston. I love them for shelves inside a front door or in the mudroom - they are so awesome and beat up looking but also evocative of pullman/trolley/train shelving (which is what they are). Really like them.

Stan wanted something like $500 for the pair. I sort of feel like these shelves should either cost 15 bucks or 500 but I'm not really prepared to spend 500. So, I'll wait for 15.

Here's the one I photographed down in Chelsea.

The stair supports seem to be plain old 3 inch (approx?) angle iron welded to the inside edge. Nice and simple. I'm down with that.

This one looks so basic, I tell myself it must be affordable. Undoubtedly it is not. But I love the simplicity of the look - and the way the rise and run are open from the size and the treads are just blocks of wood. I think this is my favorite.

Setting aside the ornateness of the metalwork , I really dig the center stringer and the elegant way the treads are attached.

design idea - raise the roof

My dream for the fourth floor back of the apt. Push up the ceiling, add skylights (or are those clerestory windows?) and leave some exposed pretty beamwork.

design ideas - stairs

Again, who knows where I copies these pics from. Got them months ago and tucked them in a folder. I'll be better when I start updating with newly found source material.

So, this pic is just about the photo of the landing on the right. Can we do something this simple as the guardrail on the landing outside the tube?


I like these a lot - but what's best is that the bannister posts are perpendicular to the stringer so they make it feel like an escalator or a cat-walk or something.
Oh, and great big heavy wood treads. Me likey.


I like this center stringer a lot. This one looks so simple - and I could maybe use old bowling alley flooring for the treads? Maybe? It's the handrail that makes it more difficult I think. What do I know? Nothing!

Seriously, I need to start saving links to pics I like as somebody deserves credit for these.

Anyway, this one looks like a toe stubbing serious injury nightmare - but it's cool. Like thin Cor-Ten style staining (okay not that gritty).


Basically though, this is my favorite. The color, the distressing, the simplicity. What fun. Square tubular steel with a steel plate top. Yahoo. (antler alert)

I'd like an app that automatically censors all antlers from photos - makes them blurry like logos on tshirts or faces or whatever. The anti-antler app. Antler obfuscator. Shan'tler.

DAMN!! I love me some bright red upholstery!! But florals or traditional patterns.

So, what is it I like about these upholstery choices? They pop, certainly.
I like the incongruity (incongruousness?) of the traditional form of the chairs and styling generally playing against the color/pop!
RULE: Henceforth, Pop! is a four letter word spelled with an exclamation point. I'd make it a five letter word if I had easier access to that upside down Spanish punctuation.

What is it we like about this in particular? For me, it is the simplicity - geometric shape - spareness - certainly the paint-job (though not so much the color).

How about this for the door from the box to the tube - but the track would extend out off the landing and into the open space hanging in the atrium.


And this for the kitchen shelving - heavy - wood - iron - simple - but with curved backs on the shelves so they sit flush up against the walls.


And, finally, I like this for simple but elegant knife storage - I don't like knives in drawers - it's scary like reaching into a box of nails - magnetic wall storage is nice, but seeing knife blades when you're not thinking about using a knife always evokes images of some murderous shit.

Oh, and not to forget - we're already heading this way, but what do you think of these light fixtures? (in the upper right quarter of the frame). In theory we could frost the inside of the fresnels we already have. But it might be nice, instead of soffet lighting, to go with a series of explosion-proof style outdoor/ship lights like these but with frosted or milkglass lenses (lenses?). By having them visible along the curved wall of the kitchen, we would sort of amplify the curvature of the room. Hmm. Or not. Whatever, we can get relatively cheap versions and try them out.
